What is Goth? The Goth Subculture

What is Goth? It could be a hardest thing to answer. It is a contemporary subculture, which we can find in many countries these days. It began in England during the early 1980s with the shoot of PUNK genre. We cannot specifically define what it is exactly. "Goth" means different things to each follower. However, in common you can say it includes a group of people who likes the darker side.

Why people tend to become a Goth? Most of them are rejected by the normal society and they found the society rules as “worthless”. The mentality of Goth is they want to be left alone but the same time they want to be seen. They are free thinkers. They like to show them as a weirdo. They want to see the shock on other peoples' faces. They do not accept the moral rules of society.

But nowadays the reason has been changed. They are attracted by the Goth music, costumes, or by the Goth friends who act freely. Many adopt unusual fashions in order to separate themselves from other youth. They wear extreme black clothing, light colored pale make-up, and red color highlight, unusual hairstyles, body piercing, bondage items, Bands, and bangles. They like to be called as “freaks”.

The Goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era have. The gothic fashion and styles are borrowed from the Elizabethan, Victorian or medieval period. Most of us believe Goths worship Satan and believe in evil powers. But there is no specific religious belief among them. It differs from follower to follower. They devote Christians, Atheism, Agnosticism, the New Age, Gnosticism, Shamanism, Wicca, and other Neopagan traditions. There are a few Satanists, who are also Goths, but they are rare.
